2006 unclaimed refunds
The IRS recently announced that approximately 19,000 Minnesotans who did not file a federal income tax return for 2006 have unclaimed refunds totaling over $16 million. The IRS estimates the median unclaimed refund is $552.If your employer withheld federal and/or Minnesota income tax from your wages in 2006, and you have not yet filed your 2006 returns, you may be due a refund.To claim a refund of any overpayments for 2006, you have until April 15, 2010 to file your federal individual income tax return. You have until October 15, 2010 to file your Minnesota Form M1.If you do not have your W-2s, first contact the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 to get W-2 information, then contact the Department of Revenue (651-296-3781 or 1-800-652-9094) to request state withholding information.
