How to Pay
Individuals may pay tax electronically or by check:

Note: If you use tax preparation software to file your income tax return, follow the payment instructions included in the software.

Pay Online or by Phone Using e-Services (free)
For both methods, you will need your Social Security number and banking information. When paying electronically, you must use an account not associated with any foreign banks.

You can pay individual income taxes, individual use tax, and bills received from the department using our e-Services system. With e-Services, your payment is withdrawn from your bank account through direct debit. We use the latest technology to ensure your information is safe. You can schedule payments in advance or pay at the last minute. If needed, you can even cancel payments up to one business day before the withdrawal date.

Use e-Services to make:

  • Income tax return payments;
  • Quarterly estimated payments;
  • Extension payments;
  • Individual use tax payments;
  • Payments resulting from amending previously filed returns;
  • Payments of tax debts from previous years; and
  • Payments for bills received from the department.

Pay by Credit or Debit Card (fees apply)
  • To pay online, go to the Official Payments website at www.officialpayments.com
  • To pay by phone, call 1-800-2PAY-TAX (1-800-272-9829).
You can pay your taxes by credit or debit card through Official Payments Corporation, a national company that partners with federal, state and local governments to provide credit and debit card payment services. You will be charged a fee to use this service. The fee goes directly to Official Payments Corporation. To calculate the fee in advance, use the fee calculator on the Official Payments website.

You can make the following payments by credit or debit card either over the Internet or by phone.

  • Income tax return payments;
  • Quarterly estimated payments for income taxes;
  • Payments for delinquent tax debts; and
  • Payments for debts referred to the Minnesota Department of Revenue.

Pay by Check
Make your check payable to Minnesota Revenue. To help ensure your payment is credited correctly to your account, you must complete the appropriate payment voucher depending on the type of payment you are making.

If you are paying:

  • the amount due on your Form M1, complete Form M60;
  • individual income tax by the due date when you are filing Form M1 after April 15 (extension payment), complete Form M13;
  • individual estimated tax, complete Form M14; or
  • the amount due on your Form M1X, complete Form M63.
Mail your check and payment voucher to the address provided on the voucher. All information on the voucher is required to process your payment.

Your check authorizes the department to make a one-time electronic fund transfer from your account, and you may not receive your canceled check.

Payment Agreements
If you owe taxes when you file your return, pay as much as you can afford with your tax return. If you cannot pay in full, you may be able to arrange a payment agreement with the department. All payment agreements are subject to a nonrefundable $50 fee. You can make voluntary payments prior to receiving a bill online or by mail at any time.

Once you receive a bill, you can set up a Payment Agreement. If you need assistance, contact the Collection Division at 651-556-3003 or 1-800-657-3909. Please have your bank account and routing numbers available when calling to negotiate a payment agreement. Our decision to grant payment terms will be based on your financial situation. We reserve the right to reject any payment proposal.
